Representation in the media (Women)

The representation of Women in the media:
Television and film are renowned to represent and reinforce the ideology in the culture of the female gender, here we witness a vast change from women in the last 40 years, In order to submit the changing roles of women in society. Television is considered the 'real' form of media, as it is the most watched. With this being the case, it becomes clear to us that we question what the real representations of women are.
Perhaps the most influential genres to television viewing is soap operas, sexism is the organised oppression over women by men.
There is a higher population of women then men, therefore if the media is a 'real' reflection, this should be evident in tv too. Yet women are typically seen less than men and infrequent in dramatic roles. When women are shown, as a passive view, mainly in soap operas as strong, independent women. This could be clear with characters of single mothers, female pub owners, or women that have experienced trauma through the series. Although with the focus of women suffering in soap operas or being villainies to adultery (in most cases) this creates a contrasting belittling affect to the female gender.
Here sums up the highlighting representations of women across all media texts;
- Beauty (mainly narrow conventions)
- Emotional approaches (thwarting the intellectual)
- Relationships (as opposed to independence and freedom)
- Physique (narrow conventions)
- Sexually (as indicated above)

The main representation of women is them in terms of part of a context and working to part of a team.

Horror Film Pitch - The Last Séance

It was Friday night and the half term had officially started. The week of Hallows eve. And as all teenagers did, this is where the partying stage begun. Girls Kate, Holly, Erin and Daisy all got together for a night of  drinking  and games...
As the night went on and the party was well underway, Erin (the host) decided that the girls should play the Ouija game. At first the rest of the girls refuse, saying that the game is false and ridiculous; but as Erin persuades on they come to an agreement. They Played.

The game had finished and the girls were having a laugh....but as the night grew deeper...
Turmoil began.

Only one would still be laughing, and laughing, and laughing...

Film Response - Scream.

I feel that this film is very gripping, but not in the sense of fear but more towards the exaggerated deaths,
so entirely filled with embellishment that it becomes comical. The characters are very obvious to their role so the film is predictable, so not suspenseful or scary but still entertaining as the actors in the film appeal greatly to an audience that people like me (adolescent) are targeted to. Overall the film is a good one, a classic horror film, and rec recommended highly

The human centipede - This is wildly disturbing.. but gripping with tension and suspense with the clips of escape, the end clip is revolting.

The shining- Very intimidating and tension building, especially the close ups of Jack Nicholson's face as he starts to change.

Britney spears - Toxic video Representation

3 questions
Who is being represented? How are they being represented? Is it a positive or negative representation?

- Britney spears is being represented;
As an air hostess, young females of a certain area of society.
- No profound race. Making a sort of unity between the women.
The body language is very flexible and fast, action; this goes along with the sound.

-Represented in a sexual way
- the dance form and revealing, plastic clothing are over exaggerated, cutting fast yet again emphasising action and movement, exaggerating it.

It is a negative representation for women in general as this gives the audience a feeling that women should be this way, however there is a positive representation of confidence and for women of Britneys shape and fitness to show what they have.

Personal response:
I feel that this video is a very negative representation of women in general, damning us as evil, spying freaky sexual vampires. This is making a bad influence on the younger generation, as this will make them feel as if this is how they should 'dress to impress'; establishing an 'positive' impression by wearing ridiculously tight and revealing clothing, when in fact wearing such appalling stuff will give you a reputation, lasting longer than that of the clothes you wear; A sexually frustrated, skimpy, man handler.
It's not fair for a younger audience, watching, to want to be Britney when they are visually deceived as the music and video is all edited, all airbrushed. However on those who are deceived heavily by this would feel great confidence, or so they say, but who would get confidence from a skinny woman, who is made to be profoundly prettier and skinnier than everyone else and prancing around with various different men in most sections of the video.

Cinematography- camera angles and meaning

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zaA9APEatw

Waynes world foxy lady scene

- 20 seconds
At first there are mid shots of all three main characters at the diner table, showing the atmosphere of the cafe. Then there is a cut to a close up of the male leads face (Garth) this shows emotion especially his strong feelings for the next angle which is shown, a mid shot of his dream-woman. The camera is then slowed down to emphasize the dream-like features of the woman, then sped up as a rush back to Garth's harsh reality, making a comical fall.

- 40 seconds
Here there is a medium shot used as all three characters are conversing, showing a build up to what my occur in the next shot.

- 1 minute
In to this, a dynamic close up rippled shot of the main male, showing his trance back into fascination. This then takes us to a long, intense shot of him using the jukebox, to three cut mid shots of various groups of the cafe as they stop, building suspense to the next act, a performance to the music as it begins to run.

-1.20
In this section we have mid shots of Garth's body dancing and occasional alterations to mid shots of the dream-woman where the camera is slowed in time with the audio music, this creates for the audience the setting that the woman is becoming attracted and fading out of being the dream, as you can tell from the flow of her hair, the strong emotion of lust.

-1.45
The emotion in this is still profoundly a feeling of lust and determination. Garth's ultra ego is being expressed but is never shown in reality, this is why we get the close up of his face in confusion as his body is reacting sexually to the music. The dream-woman is impressed the edges are blurred and slowed, and yet again embellishing a sense of a dreamy state, this then ends with a close up of Garth's last push of ultra ego.
